How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Occupational Therapy helps children and teens build the skills needed for everyday activities. Treatment is individualized and based on each child’s strengths, challenges, and goals.

Support may include help with:

Activities of Daily Living

Helping children become more independent with self-care tasks such as dressing, feeding, toileting, hygiene, grooming, bathing, and sleep routines. In these areas, support may include both guidance and practical recommendations for families.

Autism Support

Supporting participation in daily routines through sensory regulation, motor development, play skills, self-care, and environmental adaptations that make life at home and school more manageable.

Behavioural and Functional Support

Helping improve participation and engagement by addressing routines, regulation, environmental demands, and practical strategies that support success across settings.

Emotional Regulation and Self-Regulation

Supporting children in developing strategies to better manage emotions, frustration, attention, and arousal so they can participate more successfully in daily activities.

Executive Functioning

Helping with planning, organization, task initiation, working memory, time management, task completion, and self-monitoring.

Fine Motor Skills

Working on hand strength, coordination, grasp, release, dexterity, and precision for functional tasks such as dressing, school work, and play.

Gross Motor and Postural Control

Supporting balance, coordination, endurance, core strength, and posture for improved movement and participation.

Handwriting and Written Output

Helping with pencil grasp, letter formation, spacing, sizing, endurance, and overall organization of written work.

School-Based Functional Skills

Supporting the foundational skills needed to succeed in school routines, classroom activities, transitions, and learning environments.

Fatigue Management

Providing strategies for pacing, energy conservation, task modification, and routine planning to support daily functioning.

Environmental Modifications

Recommending changes to home, school, or community environments to improve access, safety, regulation, and participation.

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Helping older children and teens develop higher-level daily living skills such as organization, meal preparation, money management, and community participation.

Life Skills and Vocational Readiness

Supporting adolescents with practical independence, functional life skills, and readiness for future roles and responsibilities.
